Tech Career Insights Series: 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' - Marginalizing People of Color in the Name of Team Cohesion

January 14, 2021

With 67% of tech companies made up of less than 5% of Black employees, racial equity has become a rising organizational imperative both in terms of increasing numbers and meaningfully creating safe spaces for people of color to thrive in their roles and further in their careers. Tall poppy syndrome is an Australian term coined to reflect the practice of cutting down any poppy flower growing taller than the rest to keep all poppies growing together at the same level. The unfolding of one of AI’s premier ethicists, Timnit Gebru, and her abrupt exit from Google is just one example of how achieving the height of success does not guarantee a person of color a voice even if they have a seat at the table…especially when their views are at odds with the established structure. At a time when there is a push to bring more people of color into an industry like tech currently dominated by a mostly homogenous group, it’s critical to proactively address barriers to having true diversity of thought - required for any business to stay “competitive and relevant.”

How can organizations create space for Black and Brown professionals in tech to not just perform but have an equal voice in crucial business decisions? What strategies should aspiring and current Black and Brown tech professionals employ to effectively navigate organizations with inclusive workplaces in development? What is the difference between “imposter syndrome” and “tall poppy syndrome?” How does that difference determine accountability to effect positive outcomes? What roles should allies play in disrupting any team or organization experiencing “tall poppy syndrome?”

Global technology advisers and leaders - Elizabeth M. Adams, MBA and Marsha Smith, MBA - will discuss what “tall poppy syndrome” is and explore practical strategies for current and aspiring Black and Brown professionals to protect against this pernicious practice.

Tech Careers Series: Access and Community for Aspiring Black and Brown Tech

November 5, 2020

As a community we are all navigating the effects of COVID-19. We have seen the impact on Black and Brown communities and it has been disproportionate than to those in other communities. One pain point has been access to technology, that includes jobs, training and certifications, resources and access to the internet. Based on statistics from Microsoft, 38% of IT positions will be cloud-related by 2021. 36.9% of IT professionals claimed certification(s) helped them perform complex tasks more confidently. Professionals in the Tech space will discuss the current state of Tech and share resources and tips on how to access available programs.

How and Why To Start Investing

August 26, 2020

View the webinar presentation by Tyler Carlton, one of our interns who currently attends Boston College studying biology and chemistry. Before the pandemic, Tyler did not have much experience in finance but, found enjoyment in research of all kinds. Once the pandemic rolled around in March, his plans to work with a research scientist and take courses over the summer were derailed; he found himself at home without much to do. As he was looking around for internship opportunities, he stumbled upon the TV personality Jim Cramer and heard, "Riches are made in recessions" and to believe that the world was ending was "betting against science." Tyler's curiosity spiked; he believed in science because he had an appreciation and understanding of it. Within 3 months, researching between 3 and sometimes 9 hours a day, Tyler racked up an impressive 201% return, beating the market's 40% return in the same time period. He says, "I spent almost 300 hours in the first couple months learning terms, strategies and listening to really smart people about investing. It was not easy... I believe anyone can do it but, only if they are willing to put in the time and effort to learn."

Jordan Carter, Musician

“I have had an absolutely amazing time consulting the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation for business and financial advice. Pilayne helped me to maneuver losing my job, starting a band, building my credit, and purchasing musical instruments! Over the past few months, I have steadily watched my savings account grow as a result of the budgeting tools Pilayne recommended to me. She was even able to refer me to her amazing colleagues at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation who provided me with even more specific information on managing my band as a business. Most importantly, Pilayne has stressed financial independence by creating multiple streams of income which has been thrust to the forefront of my goals. I recommend everyone in Bed-Stuy meets with someone at the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation!”

Bre Johnson, Events & Portrait Photographer

“Hi Pilayne, I hope this email finds you and your loved ones safe and well during these unprecedented times. This is Breanna Johnson, one of your clients from the free financial counseling services at Bed-Stuy Restoration. It’s been awhile since we last communicated, maybe sometime in 2018? (time is flying).

I wanted to share with you some good news since our last conversation. First, I want to start off by saying thank you so much for encouraging me to pay off my student loans and teaching me how to budget/track my expenses. Your advice helped me to see the light at the end of the financial tunnel. As of recently, I’m officially debt free and I no longer owe money to any businesses or institutions!! I was able to make my last payment to my student loans sometime last week and I have no pending credit card bills. It feels so good to be debt free and I’m beginning to explore and learn about investing in stocks/bonds and home buying.

It’s funny as I was hitting the submit button to pay off the bill, I instantly thought of you and how happy you would be to know one of your clients beat their financial goals. Your advice helped me so much and I want to say thank you! Looking forward to hearing from you!"
