Celebrate “National Bike Month” with Kick Off Event and Community Bike Rides
Restoration’s Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (CHN) is riding into National Bike Month, with the launch of over 30 community rides. With support from People for Bikes, Restoration is partnering with Fort Greene Park Conservancy, Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, and Urban Upbound to organize a series of community bike rides over the summer. The first ride of the season will take place on May 4 2:00 PM-3:00 pm, commencing at Restoration Plaza and ending at a celebration event at Fort Greene Park (at the plaza on Myrtle and St. Edwards St.) from 3:00-4:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public and free Citibikes will be available for the ride.
The celebration event at Fort Greene Park will feature free food, crafts, information about Citi Bike membership, giveaways, and a variety of stalls set up by local vendors.
CHN leads the NYC Better Bike Share Partnership, which also includes Citi Bike, the New York City Department of Transportation and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Citi Bikes offers an affordable and equitable transportation alternative in New York City with discount memberships of $5 a month for NYCHA residents and SNAP recipients. All NYC residents taking advantage of any of Restoration’s financial mobility services are eligible to receive a discounted annual membership for $70 (originally $169 dollars a year).
Community bike rides led by CHN began in Central Brooklyn in 2015, coinciding with Citi Bike’s expansion of docking stations in Bed-Stuy. Since then, nearly 150 community bike rides have taken place. The rides have enjoyed enormous popularity with longtime residents and newcomers alike. Participants of all skill levels -- experienced, intermediate or novice – are welcome at these events. Ongoing Saturday and mid-week rides will alternate between participating organizations in Fort Greene, Bed-Stuy, and Crown Heights.
