Volunteer Spotlight: Anthony F

Share the news!

Anthony F. has been volunteering at Restoration for 3 months. He recently moved to Bedford-Stuyvesant after living for in San Francisco, where he helped open a SoulCycle studio. When he wasn't teaching spinning classes, he volunteered with the LGBTQ homeless community. This encouraged him to follow his passion for a career in social work. He says about his experience, “Creating a LGBTQ ‘support system’, de-stigmatized my outlook on the homeless population. It taught me to have an empathetic outlook I consistently strive to practice and evolve into daily.” Currently he works as a SoulCycle instructor in Park Slope. We interviewed Anthony recently to ask about his volunteer experience at Restoration.

How did you learn about the Economic Solutions Center?

Anthony: A few years ago, I wanted to go to graduate school. My family wanted me to study business but my interest was in social work. Studying policy, community organizing, and clinical work were a few of the academic interests I wanted to explore. I met Tracey Capers at my SoulCycle class and bumped into her again in the neighborhood. We talked about ways in which I could get involved at Restoration. I told her I wanted to be involved in any way I could and she suggested I visit the Economic Solutions Center (ESC). This seemed like a great way to be an advocate for the people of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

What is your role as a volunteer?

A: I volunteer as a Customer Service Specialist for the ESC. My job is to give our clients a positive experience and recommend other services they may find useful. The ESC staff are great in making sure they inform clients about all of the resources available at ESC. There are many great programs and services to recommend.

What is your favorite part about volunteering?

A: I enjoy the job because I enjoy meeting new people. Seeing the same people come into ESC repeatedly gives me a chance to get to know them better. Sometimes people just come into the office to hang out or talk! Even that is part of community engagement, so I try to help them as much as I can.
