On Tuesday, May 21, 2013 Restoration and Boys and Girls HS conducted a recognition and appreciation ceremony for our shared Job Readiness/Internship Program. This year some 40 students from Boys and Girls HS successfully completed our 12 hour course covering topics such as resume writing, job search strategies, interviewing techniques, being successful on the job and career planning. NYC Food and Fitness Partnership Re-launching

In July of last year, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (Restoration) was selected to convene the New York City Food and Fitness Partnership, one of six national areas currently awarded by the WK Kellogg Foundation. NYC FFP is an alliance whose mission is to engage communities in creating equitable access to healthy, quality, affordable foods and opportunities for active living, particularly for low-income residents.

Alcohol Awareness

Alcohol Awareness month of April is celebrated with activities planned by Restoration’s Health Initiative, Partnership for a Healthier Brooklyn. The Partnership collaborated with schools to engage children in building awareness around alcohol impact in the neighborhoods of Canarsie and Crown Heights.

Summer Youth Employment at Restoration

Applications for Summer Youth Employment are now accepted online! As one of the providers, Restoration will be placing between 250 and 300 students this year. The student application has already opened up and interested youth can apply online via: Youth will need to have their applications in by May 10 and we encourage everyone to apply directly online and not hand in any paper applications.

The truth about TREES. They are a benefit to the community because of their air –cleaning properties that help reduce pollutants in the air that trigger respiratory ailments such as asthma. Studies have also shown the shade trees provide promote physical fitness and enhance our emotional health. With this information in hand, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation continues to work diligently to bring sources of “greening” into the community. 

Restoration is expanding Workforce Services

Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation is currently preparing for three new programs to assist Central Brooklyn residents with workforce services and therefore hiring new staff.. Restoration was awarded the NYC Human Resources Administration funded Jobs-Plus Program, tailoring on-site and referral services specifically to NYC Housing Authority residents.

Boys & Girls HS students interviewed for internships

Restoration, in collaboration with Boys and Girls High School, created an internship program for juniors and seniors who are on track for graduation. The program which is in its second year and has provided job readiness training to some 120 students. Nearly half of them have been placed on paid internships in a variety of settings including in school programs, food stores, non profits and local businesses. Celebrating Restoration Youth

For the past seven years, Restoration's youth educational programs have helped some 200 youth from Bed Stuy and neighboring communities to graduate high school, enter post secondary education, vocational training programs, and obtain employment. On Tuesday, December 18, we ushered in the holidays with our current high school seniors and alumni:  college students, college graduates, as well as first year graduate students.

Community Transformation Grant (CTG) under Restoration’s Health Initiative, hosted a Screening of Byron Hurt’s, award winning documentary, Soul Food Junkies, in its Skylight Gallery on November 19, 2012. Nearly 100 guests were welcomed by an array of healthy foods and freshly-made beverages from Brooklyn based community partners and sponsors; Peaches, Isahbalia Loef, Inc., and Juice Hugger.

On Thursday, December 13, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation celebrated with tenants living at 257 Greene Avenue and 88 Clifton Street. The gathering marked not only the holiday season, but the midway point of a lengthy renovation that will afford the seniors living in the 150-unit complex completely renovated apartments, from new bathrooms and kitchens to new hard-wood floors and windows, without raising rents.

In the past couple of weeks, some 150 students from the Brooklyn Adult Learning Center (BALC) have come out to Restoration for a tour of Restoration Plaza and an introduction to our services. At noon on October 24, Restoration joined organizations all around the city in celebrating NYC Food Day theme "Big Apple Crunch", to emphasize the need for people to have access to and eat more nutritious foods. Considering one in five New York City adults are obese and food related chronic illness plague communities of color, this year’s theme is an important reminder to make eating healthy a priority for the sake of health and life.

10K Race Results In

The 31st annual 10K Run/5K Fun Walk was a huge success. We had some 600 runners and walkers, with 436 timed finishers in the 10K Run. (Runners looking for their time should check out Throngs of delighted children ran in our 4th annual kiddie run conducted by Bedford Stuyvesant YMCA and then enjoyed a bouncie ride courtesy of Fidelis. We also welcomed our six pioneers who participated in our first ever bike ride.
