Summer Youth Employment Enrollment

The deadline for Summer Youth Employment closed on May 22 and on May 28 the youth and young adults that applied will be informed whether they have been selected. Each year some 130,000 youth apply city wide and about 35,000 get selected through a random lottery. Once selected you will have 3 days to bring in all your paperwork and enroll in the program. Ms. Phillips, a 35 year old resident of Marcy Houses came to Jobs Plus operated by Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. She was referred by a family member who got word of this new program two weeks after its opening on April 15th. Ms. Phillips is raising her 14 year old daughter as a single parent. She has been unemployed for a year and worked with several programs in the area while on public assistance, yet had no success with finding employment until she found Jobs plus.

On Tuesday, May 21, 2013 Restoration and Boys and Girls HS conducted a recognition and appreciation ceremony for our shared Job Readiness/Internship Program. This year some 40 students from Boys and Girls HS successfully completed our 12 hour course covering topics such as resume writing, job search strategies, interviewing techniques, being successful on the job and career planning. NYC Food and Fitness Partnership Re-launching

In July of last year, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (Restoration) was selected to convene the New York City Food and Fitness Partnership, one of six national areas currently awarded by the WK Kellogg Foundation. NYC FFP is an alliance whose mission is to engage communities in creating equitable access to healthy, quality, affordable foods and opportunities for active living, particularly for low-income residents.

Summer Youth Employment at Restoration

Applications for Summer Youth Employment are now accepted online! As one of the providers, Restoration will be placing between 250 and 300 students this year. The student application has already opened up and interested youth can apply online via: https://application.nycsyep.com/. Youth will need to have their applications in by May 10 and we encourage everyone to apply directly online and not hand in any paper applications.

The truth about TREES. They are a benefit to the community because of their air –cleaning properties that help reduce pollutants in the air that trigger respiratory ailments such as asthma. Studies have also shown the shade trees provide promote physical fitness and enhance our emotional health. Restoration is expanding Workforce Services

Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation is currently preparing for three new programs to assist Central Brooklyn residents with workforce services and therefore hiring new staff.. Restoration was awarded the NYC Human Resources Administration funded Jobs-Plus Program, tailoring on-site and referral services specifically to NYC Housing Authority residents.

Boys & Girls HS students interviewed for internships

Restoration, in collaboration with Boys and Girls High School, created an internship program for juniors and seniors who are on track for graduation. The program which is in its second year and has provided job readiness training to some 120 students. Nearly half of them have been placed on paid internships in a variety of settings including in school programs, food stores, non profits and local businesses. Celebrating Restoration Youth

For the past seven years, Restoration's youth educational programs have helped some 200 youth from Bed Stuy and neighboring communities to graduate high school, enter post secondary education, vocational training programs, and obtain employment.
