Big Apple Crunch

Wednesday, October 24, 2012
At noon on October 24, Restoration joined organizations all around the city in celebrating NYC Food Day theme "Big Apple Crunch", to emphasize the need for people to have access to and eat more nutritious foods. Considering one in five New York City adults are obese and food related chronic illness plague communities of color, this year’s theme is an important reminder to make eating healthy a priority for the sake of health and life.

Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration celebrated Food Day in conjunction with the Coalition for the Improvement of Bedford-Stuyvesant by coordinating NYC Big Apple Crunch at Super Foodtown. Nearly 125 apples were distributed to customers, staff, and pre-schoolers from the Little Sun People who also learned about the different types of apples available in Super Foodtown before taking their crunch. By retailers and grocers participating in “Big Apple Crunch”, they were able to highlight their produce and promote healthy choices.

Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corp. is the Borough Lead Organization for the Community Transformation Grant (CTG) which is working to implement system and environmental change to improve quality food access in Brooklyn. "After all, 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'”, said Verna Ademu-John, the Program Coordinator for the CTG. “The Community Transformation Grant is doing our part to keep the doctors at bay by improving the health of Brooklyn residents."

Special thanks to Super Foodtown for their continued support, Little Sun People, Assemblywoman Annette Robinson's office and Restoration staff
